what’s happening now

It is finally April after what seemed like an unendingly long winter. Daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, primroses…we are so lucky to have a yard that blooms even though we have been so busy that we are behind on getting the gardens going! Somehow, Josh found the time to put in beets, spinach, lettuce and peas. Unfortunately, the chickens found the peas immediately, ate all of them and then created a lovely ditch in the loose dirt where they like to roll around, sometimes all six of them at the same time.

The Almond tree that we (irresponsibly) over-wintered in a pot is blooming and gorgeous. We have a pear tree, an almond tree and one more apple tree to plant; this is our to-do list for tomorrow.

And the asparagus blew up overnight. I was anxiously waiting for its rebirth; the moldy roots that it had last year made me wonder if there was something wrong with it…every day I’d check the bed for signs of life but nothing and then it seemed like overnight stalks grew 6-10 inches. This asparagus is in its fourth year (we planted 2-year roots) so we can harvest it! Moth seems intrigued but he is a diehard carnivore so I don’t have to worry about having to share.

Thanks so much for sharing a look at the garden and play time with the pets, chickens included!
Phyllis enjoyed so much getting the first-hand introduction! Hope the veggies all are as productive as last year!
